Welcome to Comberton Primary School

Year 2

Welcome to Year 2

Hello from Mrs Hartley and Mrs Heath

Firstly, we want to start by saying we hope you are all safe and well and looking forward to coming back to school. We are the Year 2 teachers and Mrs Dusconi  and Mrs Stanton will be our teaching assistants. You will know us from either leading Friday Reading Assemblies each week (Mrs Hartley) or from Mondays when I taught you in Year 1 (Mrs Heath). We are so looking forward to seeing you and we have been busy preparing our classrooms and planning all of the exciting things we will be learning.

As we haven’t been able to have our “meet your new teacher” afternoon, we would like to share some things with you so that you can find out a little more about Year 2. Lots of things will be very similar to Year 1 but a few things are different.

We will be based in the Year 2 classroom, opposite the year 4 mobile. You will come in through the Year 2 outside classroom door in the mornings and be collected from this door at home time. Staff will be on the playground to greet and guide you on your first day back and we will meet you at our classroom door to welcome you in.

There will be a few things you will need to bring to school with you. Every day, bring your lunchbox (if you are not ordering a lunch), water bottle and book bag. Please do not bring any other items such as toys. This year we are giving you your own pencil case with everything you will need to use at school. Please do not bring your own pencil case. If you know your child occasionally has toileting accidents, please send in a bag with some spare clothes and pants that can stay in school to cater for this.

Our PE day will be Thursday and you will need to come to school wearing your school PE kit (white t-shirt, black or navy shorts/joggers and trainers) on this day each week. In cold weather make sure you wear your joggers and a fleece.

Just like in year 1, reading is very important in year 2. You will read regularly in school, as part of a group in guided reading and individually.  We ask that adults at home hear you read at least 4 times every week and note this in your reading record so that you can earn rewards.

Our autumn term topic is ‘Space’. We will be finding out about the Moon Landing and the planets in our solar system. We will even train to be astronauts as part of our Space Camp day!

Mrs Hull will be teaching you English, Maths and PE/topic.

In Year 2 we have a class zone board. Everyone starts the day in the “green zone” and if you work really hard and show positive behaviour you will be moved up to “silver” or “gold”. You will then be rewarded with a sticker at the end of the day. If you are making wrong choices, you may move down the zone board to “orange” or “red” which may result in losing a playtime.

We're really looking forward to ‘getting back to normal’ in the autumn and can’t wait to hear everything you’ve been up to whilst you’ve been away. Please don’t worry about anything; we know you have been away from school for a long time and it is our job to help you settle back in and get back on track with school work. If you have any questions for us you can email us at and we’ll try our best to answer them.

Have a lovely summer and we will see you in September!

Key Information

  • PE - Year 2 will enjoy PE lessons on Thursday and children will need to come dressed in their PE kit (proper kit please) on this day.
  • Reading book and reading record – Please bring these to school every day. When you have read your book, put in the finished book basket. The teacher or teaching assistant will decide when you need to change your book .

  • Homework – this will be given out on Friday and will need to be brought back the following week.

  • A good attitude – we have lots to learn and we need to show good listening, determination, perseverance, tolerance, respect, collaboration and most importantly we need to take responsibility for our own learning.

Dates for your Diary

We look forward to welcoming you back to school on Thursday 3rd September.
